After much thought and consideration, I’ve decided on a summer project and that project will be to rank every Hornets draft pick. Why? Because, what else am I going to do? Save the world? Go to the gym? Learn more about my baby? Not while there are still Tom Tolbert stories to uncover.
I haven’t decided on how it will be released (all at once, in phases). We will definitely turn it into Locked On Hornets silly season content.
I’ve decided on my 3 main criteria and a bonus metric that enlists the help of those that financially support our humble Substack (see below).
First, the criteria.
Criteria 1: Did It In The Boxscore (DITBOX)
This is Every Hornets Boxscore for gods sake. I have to take into account the production. This whole ranking is really about what you did in Charlotte. Heavy years, heavy production guys are going to get an advantage over others that may have stronger talent profiles or overall NBA resumes.
Criteria 2: Value Relative to Draft Position (VERDIP)
This will help smooth out the 2nd round picks who did 2nd round things and hold lottery picks to account for their production (or often lack thereof). If you’re a top 5 pick I’m expecting hardware and/or honors, top 15 a high level role player and if you’re a 2nd rounder someone who sticks around for a year or two. This rating will also take into account players the Hornets passed up on to make the selection. Is that fair to the individual player? No, they had no control over that. BUT this ranking is a comprehensive ranking of player impact and front office decision making.
Criteria 3: Estimated Vibes Plus/Minus (EVPM)
How much did the pick add to the good or bad vibes for fans? All players will begin at 5 and lose or gain from there. This will smooth things out for some picks that didn’t stay long or didn’t contribute as much in the boxscore but also didn’t harm the team’s reputation.
Criteria 4: Stangin’ or Clangin’ Quotient (SCQO)
That’s right, there’s finally a “Sicko” stat. I need help from the sickest of the sick, the EHB financial supporters to help me with the most high profile Hornets draft picks.
Below is link to a Google Form where you can rate the selections on a very scientific scale of Clangin’ to Stangin’.
